Buddhist Thought: Success!

Whenever you hear that someone else has been successful, rejoice. Always practice rejoicing for others–whether your friend or your enemy. If you cannot practice rejoicing, no matter how long you live, you will not be happy.

– Lama Zopa Rinpoche, “Transforming Problems Into Happiness”

You know when you hear about your friend’s promotion? His success he worked so hard for? When he wins the lottery or inherits so much money to pay off the mortgage? Or the guy who just did things right and ended up with a job that ticks all boxes for him … and it would for you? The one with the great family and healthy kids?

Listing this I notice a lot are money dependent. However, that is not really the point. Whenever someone has success, that could be money but even a promotion or achievement like running a marathon, don’t get envy. Rejoice. Practice to feel happy for others. Be happy for your enemy, competitor, and friend.

You will never gain happiness yourself if you cannot be happy for others.

Be happy!
