DIY – Renovating part 1

I think I mentioned it before. My wife is “nesting” and we are looking into turning our house into our home.

Part one was the hall. My wife painted and then started sanding the floor with a small sander she had. Not a good idea, took too long. So we hired a bigger one last weekend and I did the floors downstairs in the hall and she did the hand rail. Now, the cleaning of this fine dust was the worst thing!

Done and dusted (literally) now and we live with a hall that needs varnishing still and a carped down the middle of the stairs which still needs painting.

Upstairs we aim for laminate flooring for

a) the landing where you get laminate looking like real wood, and
b) the bathroom. There are clever solutions out there now where laminate looks like ceramic floors.

So I am quite impressed of what we can do and now I am eager to get it done. My wife plans to do some of the painting and varnishing as I am not patient enough to do a good job. However, I will try my luck with the laminate upstairs. If it goes well… who knows, I might be doing the living room soon.

Here are some pictures.

Veggies for the garden

Wow, my veggies I planted the other days are growing like mad.

Broccoli, Radish, Salad, Beans, Courgettes and Carrots. Yummy.

Cannot wait to put them outside.

The hungry caterpillar

Ach well, the snow has some advantages.

My wife didn’t have to go to work and managed to paint the hungry caterpillar on the baby room’s wall :-)

German Engineering – or how to potty train a cat

Our cats are now almost 6 months. Gretel has been sterilized and therefore, they are outside quite a lot. However, they still have not been going outside to the loo.

It was definitely going to be too much, so on Saturday I decided to take the litter tray outside. When the cats went to their usual place in the house looking for the tray, we carried them outside. And, they both did their poo outside. Yippee!

Wow, what a progress.

Now, I was worried that it might rain. So I used my imagination and engineering skills (if you didn’t know, I have a mechanical engineering degree :-) ) to build a poo tent.  My wife gave me some practical hints too. Maybe not quite a portaloo but surely something all other cats will envy our cats for, don’t you think. Let’s just hope the wind does not pick up.

German Engineering I guess, hehe.

Btw, have you seen the new matrix style Volkswagen Ad on TV?

Hedgehog house

Everyone was laughing when I put a hedgehog house, self build out of bricks, into my garden. I had one ever since I was a boy. Often they were inhabited by mice instead of hedgehogs, however they are easy to make with a few bricks.

Now, what I did not know: You can buy them too, see this shop.

from tapas to taps

Yes, we finally made a decision on our bathroom. Originally we wanted to completely re-do it but with the credit crunch, Christmas and the hassle we found a temporary (3 years?) solution for now: NEW taps to start with.

Matching the shower curtain some how, we decided to get the following basin tap and bathroom shower mixer:

They are the Prism Range from Bristan Group. We now will get the plumber in soon to get them fixed :-) Happy days.

shower curtain

Another sad story today.

As you know I am working for a multilingual search marketing agency. Whilst this blog is totally private and has nothing to do with my job (most of the time anyway), I wanted to show how work and life can fit together :-)

world-map-shower-curtain

It might be a sad, geeky thing to have, but my shower curtain is a world map. I got it so I know which countries are where. Also, it gives me inspiration of where we can sell our services or where we can expand our services.

Work life balance I guess ;-)
Have a good Friday and a good weekend.

Busy Week – on the road again….

….I was away for 2 days again in York.

Whilst I write so often that I do not like travelling, it is good to get out of your daily routine. But, there is nothing like coming home. Your home, your wife, your kittens….I love home.

My wife put on more pictures of the kittens. So it is nice to know that there is someone at home, waiting for someone. I supposed I get quite settled, don’t I?

On Thursday I am at a conference in Barcelona speaking about “measuring the impact of design“. It is nothing else than a trip to York, 2 hours flight from London, only difference that you won’t get wifi on the plane yet.

So it is a rather busy week but I try to give you another update on what is happening later on this week.

No more bad DIY

As I wrote before, I might not be the best of all DIY people.

You know I bought the Collins DIY book and drilled through a power cable.

Yesterday, putting up the pictures, I used the Black and Decker Sensors which worked fabulous, giving me the confidence to drill, nail and put up all those pictures.

Comes highly recommended!
